Construction Practices

What is good construction practices? And how important is it? We all are curious to know when we read this term. So let us discuss on that.

Good construction practices means the generally recognized and accepted reasonable and prudent practices, methods, skill, care, techniques.

Why this practice should be followed? So here the answer is…

Good construction practices and technique should be followed to prevent occurrence of structural damages that may occur during occupancy and with age of the structure. When structure is being constructed it has to go through the various stages and it equally important that to make sure that the structure being constructed will not experience damage under any general circumstances. Development of crack in is the first sign of damage and this not only reduce its strength but will also harm structure and to the extent it may collapse. So it is very important for the civil engineers to ensure good construction practices are followed at every stage of construction to prevent structural damage and failure of the structure.

Following are the good construction practices and techniques that shall be followed for good quality and durable construction of structure:

  • Masonry work
  • Concrete work
  • RCC frame work
  • Plastering
  • Concrete and terrazzo floor
  • RCC Lintels
  • RCC roof slab
  • Provision of glazed, terrazzo or marble tile on vertical surface
  • RCC work in exposed condition
  • Finish on wall
  • Pace of construction
  • Provision of reinforcement for thermal stresses
  • Extension of existing building
  • Rich cement treatment on external walls
  • Movement joints
  • Filling in plinth

In next article of Good construction practices will discuss on each and every aspect.

Has anyone meet this kind of failure in their construction journey? Share your experience in comment box.

Drones in Construction

Drones are very popular in the building industry as the fact that they provide an aerial view of a site at a comparatively smaller amount of the cost of the construction. It has been a major innovation in last few years. This means they can be used to develop plans, track progress and monitor any issues throughout the construction process.

Drones help to track and communicate progress, track and manage materials and assets, reduce theft, improve owner visibility, increase safety, and provide valuable information for improving design changes.

Here’s a look at some of the ways drones have already changed the industry and how these trends will impact construction operations in the future.

Surveying Land

Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAVs) are rapidly replacing traditional land-surveillance methods. They are growing in popularity so rapidly that some have even abandoned the classic “bird’s-eye view” expression with “drones eye view.”  Drones greatly reduce the labour and time involved in producing accurate surveys. Drones eliminate much of the human error involved in the process and have the ability to capture necessary data in much less time than traditional methods would take.

Improvements to Infrastructure

Drones provide superior endurance and intelligence on job sites. Their ability to collect and report data allows them to complete work faster. In the future drones will take on even more integral tasks involved in large projects.

Communication and Management

Drones are being used more and more as a means of maintaining constant contact at worksites. Drones are providing real time data and that will impact a sharp increase in efficiency in communication and management.

Improved Overall Security

The advent of drones is causing a sharp increase in security efficiency.

Accurate Surveillance

Drones have the ability to be practically everywhere at the same time. They don’t just reduce the theft and keep workers safer but also create an around-the-clock, real-time monitoring system that has already been adopted by a number of construction companies. They elevate onsite security and safety by a tremendous margin.

Transportation and Inspection

The use of drones in job site inspection also means a drastic increase in worksite safety by eliminating numerous dangers and safety hazards. Using drones to transport goods aerially allows companies to execute difficult inspections and keep track of everything that enters and leaves the job site. It saves money and time and keeps the site secure.https://www.youtube.com/embed/AMq9YpqA-To?version=3&rel=1&showsearch=0&showinfo=1&iv_load_policy=1&fs=1&hl=en&autohide=2&wmode=transparent

Construction Automation

Construction automation helps to increase construction quality and reduces its time. Construction automation involves production of construction material, prefabrication of construction components, on site construction, operation and maintenance of buildings, and demolition and recycling of structures. If this technique is adopted, construction period will decrease and it will provide large economic advantages. In addition to that it will improve labour safety also.

Advantages of Construction Automation

  • It will provide more precise and consistent product compared to produce by experienced workers.
  • It is helpful in difficult physical work.
  • It helps in construction where the site is dangerous and life of labour is at risk at that time automation will solve the problem.
  • It simultaneously declines costs and increases efficiency and productivity.
  • Finally, it is worth mentioning that automated construction and robotics enhance work environment because workers will be distanced from uncomfortable work position.

This is used in construction sector, precast industry, prefabrication of masonry, timber construction, production of steel components etc. Also partial automation robotics is used in road construction, tunnelling and earthworks.

In Concrete precast component production, automation is required at very high scale and number of precast components is produced as per requirement. It is so useful that we can get consistent quality and wastes are avoided.

For onsite automation, several apparatuses which has been used for different purposes on project site for example concrete screeding, finishing, scrubbing and cleaning.

Automation in masonry construction play major role in terms of decrease manpower and labour cost.

Wood processing has shifted from manually processing to complete processing utilizing compute numerical controlling machines.

Automation and robotic have been used to a great extent by steel companies which prefabricate building components according to contractor demand. The steel components will be transferred to project site for erection. It should be said that automation and robotics are not used in erection process to a great extent; manual welding screwing is used during construction.
